Two Heads
1. Once, Shanidev visited his Guru Lord Shiva with a request. When Shiva asked him the purpose of his visit, Shanidev stated that he wanted to pass over the Moon, which was seated atop Lord Shiva’s head.
Shanidev said that he would have to follow the path of his revolution and would grace the Moon for a period of 7 and half years. Lord Shiva requested Lord Shani not to put his gaze on him, as it would bring bad luck to him.
Shanidev said that he would have to follow the path of his revolution and would grace the Moon for a period of 7 and half years. Lord Shiva requested Lord Shani not to put his gaze on him, as it would bring bad luck to him.
3. Then Shanidev insisted that he must grace Shiva for 7.5 years, but on Shiva’s request he was ready to settle for 2.5 years. Shiva was still hesitant and finally they both agreed on 3 hours and 45 minutes, as the time that Shani’s gaze would be on Shiva.Lord Shiva wanted to avoid the bad effects of Shanidev’s gaze. So he decided to go to the river Ganga and take a bath to pass the time of Shani’s gaze.
5. On his way, Shiva met Shanidev whom he did not recognize; as Lord Shani was disguised as a melon seller. Shiva bought two melons from him and carried them in a bag. Then he went to the Ganges and took a bath.
6. Meanwhile, some guards from a nearby kingdom were searching for the son of their King and Minister, who had gone hunting the day before. They didn’t return home and the King sent his guards to search the forests thoroughly. These guards came across Lord Shiva and were suspicious of him, as blood was dripping from his bag.
7. Shiva was unaware and he said that his bag only had two watermelons. When the guards said that blood was dripping from the bag, Lord Shiva looked at it and saw that they were speaking the truth. He then opened the bag and to his surprise, the heads of the sons of the King and Minister were in it.
8. The King wanted to hang Shiva who he thought was the murderer. But Lord Shiva asked them to wait for 3 hours and stated that the heads of his sons were the illusion of Shanidev. After three hours the heads turned into watermelons again and the sons of the King and the Minister returned back home.
6. On his way back Lord Shiva met Shanidev again. Shanidev asked Lord Shiva about how effective his gaze was. Shiva acknowledged that Shanidev had proven his strength and that Shani’s gaze was a terrific thing which even left himself surprised.
